How much paint will I need for my DIY project?

Paint, Clear Coat, and Tough Coat all have approximately the same coverage. Keep in mind, these are estimations that will vary depending on which colors you are using, what type of surface you are painting, and how thick you apply each coat.

4 oz Paint will cover a standard chair or approximately 15 square feet.

16 oz Paint will cover a medium dresser or approximately 60 square feet.

32 oz Paint will cover a large piece of furniture such as a hutch or approximately 120 square feet.

What about brushes?

When selecting the right brush for you, be sure to select one that has synthetic bristles. Because Country Chic paint is water based, using brushes with natural bristles will absorb the water and cause the bristles to flare and the paint will not effectively adhere to the surface.

Prepping the surface & getting started

First step is to clean the surface you want to paint with warm soapy water and then let it dry. If you are painting over another water-based paint or a natural surface, you don’t necessarily need to sand the surface, but you can - just enough so that it is dull. Test a small section and let it dry for 24 hours. If you are confident and have painted before, go ahead and paint your entire piece.

For oil or solvent based paints, you will need to sand until it’s dull, but it is a better idea to apply our Clear Bonding Primer as well. Oil will not allow a water-based paint to bond with it, unless it is properly prepped. When you are ready, start with a small test section, let dry for 24 hours. Then scratch it with a fingernail to see if it sticks. If it doesn’t, then you will need to do a bit more prep and apply Country Chic Clear Bonding Primer.
